Asked and hopefully answered the right way

As someone ask:
When Jesus said go and sin no more, what does he actually mean?

I don’t understand this fully. How can we stop sinning like this. I’m a Christian and try my best trying to not fall into temptation. Is he only talking about willful sinning or overall sinning?

My dear friend

John 8:11 says;

And she said, No one, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.

This woman was caught in the act of adultery and was dragged out in the public to be stoned. No one there was qualified to stone here since not one was without sin. The Lord Jesus was the only one who was sinless and qualified to condemn her sinful condition… but He didn’t . Rather He supplied her with something that we see in the next verse.

12 Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall by no means walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

On our own, in our selves, we will ALWAYS be overcome by sin, satan and the flesh. But the Lord offers Himself to us as our light so that we would not be those walking in darkness. Those who do always stumble. He also said that we shall have the Light of Life.
Life always overcomes death, which is the wages of sin.

So in this question, its not that this woman would never sin again, since John’s epistles covers this in a very clear matter, but this matter of adultery, the Lord not only forgave her sins, but also supplied her with the Light of Life to overcome this weakness to sin.

We are all filled with weakness, shortcomings, failures and sin.
I really treasure this verse.
1 John 3:6
Everyone who abides in Him does not sin; everyone who sins has not seen Him or known Him.

1 John 3:9
Everyone who has been begotten of God does not practice sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God

The part of us begotten of God is our regenerated spirit. The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God.

In our soul we still struggle, but in our spirit we are born of God and do not sin. The problem is with the flesh ( fallen body) and our soul which was so damaged because of sin.

I believe the Lord was speaking of habitually sinning. Of remaining in an adulterous condition. To say that this woman would not sin again does not match up with the Word. But we see also that our spirit, this part of us begotten of God, does not sin because the Seed of God’s life is sown into our spirit. God’s life is not one of sin.

Which is why we need to set our mind on the spirit where there is life and peace. We need to pray and ask the Lord to keep us abiding in Him. Apart from Him we can do nothing but be failing sinners.

Romans 8:2 is so powerful.
As the Law of the Spirit of Life, the Lord Jesus frees us every day all day, as we turn to Him, from the Law of sin and death.

” For the Law of the Spirit of Life, has freed me in Christ Jesus, from the law of sin and of death.”

THe POWER of sin is no longer enslaving and overcoming us. But when we do sin, we come to the Lord at the THrone of Grace and obtain mercy for timely help.
IF we confess our sins and He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness.

I need to take courage in verses like these found in the word. TOo often satan bullies us in our minds, causes us to doubt the Word, doubt God’s heart and words to us. But we have the Lord interceding for us, supplying us with the Light of Life and all that He is to overcome satan and sin.

May we continue to turn and contact the Lord during the day, when we feel weak.. Talking to Him, draw from Him. He will keep us to the end.
